OKAY so i've been meaning to do something community (as in you guys) related for a while now and i thought i might have just the thing.
a while back i made a click and drag armor design thing that's basically a randomizer for design elements
of course this was on tumblr and nobody really did anything design related with it
so i got to thinking where could this go to use?
the design game works as follows:
-click a tile and drag it off its base (most likely to the right or left of the box) it will have stopped on a word, that is your word for that category
-do this same step for each category until you have your complete set of words (it'll make sense when you get to the page ^^)
you may change your set only once and if you do change you MUST keep the second set, no going back. this is to prevent people from making it much easier for themselves. Remember this is supposed to be a challenge, hopefully it'll help you become a better designer!
-must be your own creation, don't use bases or helpers or anything (also don't trace anything cause seriously?? it won't help you)
-this contest pretty much lends itself to visual arts so writing probably won't be accepted (although if it'd help you while writing feel free to use it!)
-it doesn't have to be worn but it should be presented in either a fully- dressed mannequin way or ref sheet style (as in all the parts should be there)
-pretty much just have fun w/ it and if you want to use it outside the contest feel free to it's just a tool at your disposal
i'll be judging if there aren't too many people who enter, though if there are more i'll get some other people to help me.
the criteria are as follows:
-effort put into the design: does it use many different things or combine the words in a creative way? bonus points will be given if the design has special meaning to it. another part of this category is credibility. the design has to make sense in a 3D space (though this can be fudged a little)
-presentation: is it finished? entries with a more finished look will score better than those missing some components. Color is recommended but not mandatory. In this category is also the organization of the armor set on the page, scattered components will not look as appealing as a well crafted and neatly laid out sheet.
-creativity: some of the prompts are very broad and can be taken in many different ways, pushing the envelope is encouraged, try to twist the words you're given into a comprehensible and working design (at times it will be hard depending on what you are handed but keep in mind i'll know what you've got and will give you leeway. plus who knows sometimes the best, most meaningful things come from ridiculous prompts)
bonus points will be given for backstory: again the prompts probably won't match up too well, if you can figure out some kind of story or reason for it to exist it'll reflect well on your design.
if i had cash i'd give it away but i don't so instead i can offer art prizes
1st place: fullbody drawing of a character of your choice, painted or cel shading, lines or lineless (maybe wearing your armor design?? idk pretty much whatever you want) OR if you wanted i could design something for you eg. armor set, weapon set, special item, character, species... etc. (if it's an item/weapon/ armor i could include numerical stats if you gave me a target level -dnd related-)
2nd place: headshot of your character, painted (given a solid 2-2.5 hours) OR a small design (single weapon/ item/ piece of armor) (with stats if applicable)
deadline is TBA though probably sometime near christmas (depending on interest i may change the date)
you can have as many entries as you want but don't rush to get a bunch in, take your time; it's quality not quantity that counts.
